String Theory 2 - Melody Making

Group guitar class taught by Molly Miller

6 lessons · 1 hour per week · intermediate

This class will dig into understanding the fretboard utilizing triads, scales, and chord shapes. Guitarists get stuck playing fills and chords versus melodies that draw people in. We will investigate how to make melodies, comp (play rhythm) and solo using triads, pentatonic scales, and other color tones. At the end of this class, you will better understand the fretboard and be a stronger improvisor and rhythm guitar player. We will look at how to do more with the chords you know and more with the scales you know.

I am a lover of guitar. I have been playing since I was 7 - I grew up playing with my 4 siblings. I studied at USC, where I received my Doctorate in Guitar Performance and now am a professor. I play constantly- touring with artists such as Jason Mraz, Molly Miller Trio, and all over the internet!
What you'll do

Pentatonic Scales - Let's Go Deeper!

We will spend a few weeks exploring how to unlock the pentatonic scale into more! This means investigating how to use it in a macro and micro manner: both in one key center and addressing every chord that passes. Let's dive into how to make our guitars sing and not just play licks.

Macro Vs. Micro Soloing

When it comes to soloing, there are countless approaches. We will dig into how to solo in a macro way (one scale for lots of chords) and the micro (every chord gets a scale!)

But HOW Do I Solo?

Soloing can be weird and aimless. We can so easily just meander. Where do we start? Let's uncover multiple approaches, so we can have many options on HOW to solo. You don't need to know 100 scales to do this either. We will investigate other solos in order to help develop our own as well.

TRIADS

We will continue on our triad journey, mastering the triads on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string set.

Who you are
In order to take this course, you should have a basic understanding of the pentatonic scale in multiple positions, barre chords, open chords, and major/ minor triads on the first string set.
What to bring
Guitar Amp (if you are on electric) Some time throughout the week to dig in and make music!

She's a great, organized and knowledgable teacher. She always had a plan for the class, and was willing & able to pivot if we needed it.

This class helped me focus my improvisation. I have a better grasp of macro vs micro soloing, and feel like I've left this course being a more intentional player. The course materials were helpful and well selected for practice. Also, Molly's feedback on our homework videos was valuable, helping me improve technique and bad habits that have gone unnoticed over time. Thanks Molly!

Molly is the best. I took this class previously, and enjoyed it so much that I retook it. I learned so much even the second time around. When else are you going to be able to take a class with a doctorate level professor of guitar?

I knew of triads on strings 1-3 and 2-4. It had never occurred to me to look for triads on 3-5 and 4-6. This course gave an excellent introduction to that. The course material also helps to reveal the pentatonic scales around the triads. This is useful, though it's going to take me time to absorb, and have it ready to use live.

I can't remember if there were pre-requisite for this class but, if not, there should be. There were some terms and concepts that were mentioned during the course of the class that I really didn't know/understand, so it was a little challenging to put the discussion in the context of what was being taught. For example, something as basic as "circle of fifths"...I have heard of that, but I really don't have any idea what it means, so anytime it was referenced, I felt at a bit of a disadvantage. That said, Molly is great and explains things very well, so it didn't really impact the value of the class. The only other thing I could suggest, which I did during the course of the lessons, is if she posted her "answers" to the homework. I found it extremely helpful to see how she approached the assignments and what her "homework" looked/sounded like. Great class! Glad I found it!
